Solar energy is one of the major renewable sources of energy available in the earth. Sun is the major and largest source of energy. So if we are able to harvest this solar energy and utilize them for various purposes it will be a great achievement. Solar efficiency means the amount of ambient light that can be converted into usable electricity.

Kerala is one of the states of India now facing the electricity deficit problem. If we are able to harvest solar energy, we will be able to overcome this problem. Kerala depends mainly on conventional or nonrenewable energy source such as coal, diesel, gas and hydro energy. In Kerala Only 4% of the total installed plant capacity rely on renewable energy sources. Kerala has a solar rooftop potential of 10,000 MW at the present efficiency level of 16.5 per cent. If module is improved the efficiency could increase to 20,000 MW.

The incredible growth in global solar capacity has been accomplished thanks to FIT and rooftop grid connected solar panel installation, he told Business Line on the sidelines of a lecture here. Massive production of components has brought down the unit price of components resulting in overall decline in cost of solar power.

In a giant leap towards using renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions, Kerala’s Cochin International Airport (CIAL) has become the first airport in the world to operate entirely on solar power. The airport has set up a 12 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant to provide for its energy needs. It is also the single largest solar project to be constructed in any airport in India. A press release issued by airport authorities says the annual power production of the plant will be 18 million units, and over the next 25 years, this project will help the airport avoid more than 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to planting 3 million trees.

Having the world’s first solar powered airport, as well as India’s first floating PV projects and solar education centre and, the state of Kerala has been a frontrunner in innovation and now its industry has a watch on an intensely ambitious rooftop solar goal.
